About Training and Grant Resources

Hunger Workshop Huge Success

Hunger workshop

On Saturday, February 20th, Episcopal Charities held its first hunger workshop at St. Andrew's, Palmetto Bay. Twenty-five participants registered and attended the three hour "nuts & bolts" gathering to learning more about feeding programs. Participants expressed pleasure at the solid information given to help with their ministries. Information about how to start, expand and maintain quality programs, how to recruit and keep volunteers, how to set boundaries so volunteers don't become burned out, and how to become a partner agency with our Feeding South Florida Food Bank were on the program agenda. In addition, how to use free and accessible technology to make running a program easier and communicating with volunteers and other parishioners were discussed.

"Very informative — clear, outstanding presentation by knowledgeable professionals. Helpful to our outreach programs," said one participant. Another commented, "Extremely informative, good basic 'how–to' information".

Episcopal Charities is responding to the needs of our Diocesan outreach partners who are trying to feed the growing numbers of hungry men, women and children. "Feeding Our People" offers congregations a variety of ways to get involved and help end hunger in local communities, including coordinating monthly food drives. Please click here to download the Food Drive Canned & Non Perishable Goods List and the Program Partners in need.

We are also offering training to congregations wishing to begin a feeding ministry. Episcopal Charities will show you how to:

  • Become a Food Stamp application site
  • Distribute free lunches to children during the summer months
  • Join a 'gleaning' team:
Members of your congregation, including youth, can help 'glean' extra produce at farms, with the crops gathered being distributed to the poor

Watch for a manual of 'best practices' for feeding programs that Episcopal Charities will offer to congregations in 2010!
